Our Digital Community Is Different
Evidence continues to mount that traditional social media companies are hazardous to human mental, emotional, and physical health.
The original dream of social networks that connect us has morphed into social media that increases rates of depression, impairs cognition and attention span, sows political discontent, and even contributes to death by suicide.
The major social media platforms are engineered as “addiction machines” with endless content designed to keep you hooked, becoming more elated or enraged by the second, all so the companies can mine your personal data and sell it to the highest bidder. The technology is so problematic that even the CEOs and creators of social media platforms won’t let their own children use them.
The major social media platforms today are deeply unethical.
Arethion is different.
Our social network is dedicated to human wellbeing, not profit. It’s a place to connect with friends, family, and neighbors; a place to share, learn, and grow.
Consequently, the Arethion social network does not look or feel like the major platforms you’re used to:
- We keep our users’ data private and never sell it.
- We forbid ads on the network.
- We do not have endless scrolling (an addiction trick).
- The activity feed exclusively contains posts relevant to you, without prompts to keep watching or to follow people you’ve never heard of.
- There are no “Likes,” which have been linked to increases in rates of depression, stress, and suicide.
- No one can see the number of “Followers” a user has (because life isn’t a popularity contest).
Traditional social media is offered “for free” because you are not the user – you are the product. Your attention and data are being sold to advertisers. We at Arethion believe it is more ethical to charge a small fee for use the platform. This fee covers server costs, product development, and salaries.
There are many more ethical and technological advancements we’d like to make, and your support for the network will enable us to achieve those milestones.
